Harriet D. Ward, 93, fortified with the sacraments of the Holy Mother Church, entered into rest at 5:40 p.m. on Sunday, June 12, 2011 at her residence.
She was born on June 28, 1917 in Alton, IL, the daughter of the late Fred E. & Sophia (Adame) Hess
She married Leonard J. Ward at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton on November 20, 1941. He passed away on April 29, 1997.
Harriet was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Alton. She worked at St. Joseph for 38 years as a medical transcriptionist. She also worked part time during the 38 years at, St. Anthony’s Health Center, Alton Memorial and Wood River Hospitals until her retirement. She then came out of retirement and worked for Dr. Vest in his office until she was 87. She enjoyed traveling and life.
She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, William. K. & Jeannie Ward of Alton and Thomas E. Ward of Alton; three daughters and a son-in-law, Janice M. Ward of Alton, Mary K. Ward of Alton and Susan E. & Rick Sowders of Alton; nine grandchildren, William, Carol Ann, Steven, Daniel, Julie, David E., Patricia, David A. and Angela; several great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sons, David E. and James L. Ward; one infant daughter, Patricia Ann Ward; one sister Rosemary Flavin; one brother, Fred Hess and three daughters-in-law, Blanche, Peggy and Janet.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Staten-Fine Funeral Home. A rosary service will began at 3:30 p.m..
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s on Thursday, June 16, 2011 with Fr. Nnamdi Moneme O.M.V. officiating.
Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Alton.
Memorials may be made to Masses.
