Harold Benton

Harold Ray Benton, Sr. 76, passed away at 1:20 am Friday, June 6, 2014 at St. Anthony’s Health Center in Alton. 

He was born on January 9, 1938 in Alton, IL, the son of Marion A. and Minnie (Hoffman) Benton.   

He married Sheila Joyce Irvin on June 10, 1961 in Albuquerque, NM.  She survives. 

He was a fireman for the South Roxana Fire Department and worked for Ed Kraut and Son Tree Service.  He was a member of the Wood River Search and Rescue Team and had worked as an EMT at Wood River Emergency Corp.  He was a mechanic by trade and he enjoyed race cars.  His world revolved around his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.   

In addition to his wife, Joyce, he is survived by his children and their spouses, Theresa Rene’e and Pete Cravens of Cottage Hills, Harold Ray and Cindy Benton Jr. of Hartford and Sherri and Mike Reedy of St Jacob, IL; his grandchildren, Joseph Benton and his finance’ Samantha Braman, Michael and Lindsey Anderson, Ashley and Dan Allen, Jimmy Benton and his finance’ Lyndsey Kelso, Bradley Brewer and Haleigh Brewer; four great grandsons, Conner Anderson, Kaleb Benton, Landen Benton and Gunner Allen and four great granddaughters, Camille Allen, Alaina Anderson, Serinity Gehrhardt and Luxie “Bear” Gehrhardt; his brothers and their spouses, Ben and Cheryl Benton of Wood River, Bill and Cyndi Benton of Missouri and Robert and Carolyn Benton of Bethalto and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a daughter, Sheila Marjorie Benton, a granddaughter, Jennifer Lynn Benton, two brothers, Donald Benton and Ronald Benton, and a son-in-law, Mike Cooper.

A memorial visitation will be from 5 until services at 7 pm Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto.

Inurnment will be at a later date at Bethalto United Methodist Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association.
