Harold Bixen, 81, passed away at 3:00 pm Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at Rosewood Care Center in Alton with his family by his side.Harold was born in Bunker Hill on July 18, 1934 to Alvin and Alma (Zarges) Bixen. He was raised by his grandparents, William and Mary Bixen, after the death of his mother when he was six months old.He married Mary Aljets on October 16, 1955 at Emmaus Lutheran Church in Dorsey. They have celebrated 60 years of marriage.  She survives.Harold had worked at Alton Boxboard (Jefferson Smurfit Corporation).  In addition, he served in the United States Army at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He and his son John enjoyed building and renovating houses.  Harold was a volunteer fireman for the Dorsey Volunteer Fire Department and an active member of Emmaus Lutheran Church in Dorsey. He enjoyed travelling, camping, and spending time with family.In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Janet and David Francis of Godfrey; son, John Bixen of Alton; daughter-in-law, Kara Bixen of Dorsey; grandson, Lukas Bixen of Dorsey; granddaughter and spouse, Brittany and Steven Ginn of Canton, Georgia;  great-grandchildren, Avrie and Hudson Ginn;  a sister, Dorothy Spickerman;  sister-in-laws, Marguerite Fechte and Ruth Kuethe;  and brother-in-law and spouse, Frederick and Verline Aljets.Harold was preceded in death by his parents; son, Robert Bixen; sister, Alice Spickerman; and sister-in-law, Esther Hoffstetter.Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm Friday, July 8, 2016 at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto.Funeral Services will be held at 11 am Saturday, July 9, 2016, with a visitation from 10:30 to 11:00 am at Emmaus Lutheran Church in Dorsey with Pastor David Kern officiating.Burial will follow at Emmaus Lutheran Church Cemetery in Dorsey.Memorials may be made to Emmaus Lutheran Church.Online condolences may be left at
