H. Leland Thomasson, 88 passed away Wednesday July 18, 2012 at Eunice Smith Home in Alton, with family at his side.

Leland was born in Carrollton, IL on September 10, 1923 the son of Harry Lester and Dolen Mae (Eubanks) Thomasson. His parents, a brother, Kenneth L. Thomasson, and sisters, Lucille D. Hering and Bertha A. Norris, preceded him in death.

Leland married Virgina Lee Sturgeon on May 23, 1943. They shared 69 loving years together. She survives along with their daughters, Chris Poole and Ellen “Jill” Thomasson. Also surviving is one grandchild Joe Poole and his wife Shani, and great-grandchildren Keaton Poole and Nolan Poole.

Leland served as an Air Force corporal in the 44th bomb squadron in Africa and Italy during WWII. After the war, he returned to Alton where he was employed at Foster’s Drug Store/ Foster’s Photo for over fifty years. During his career there he was recognized by the Alton Business and Professional Women’s Association as one of the most courteous clerks in Downtown Alton.

He was an active member of Cherry Street Baptist Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher, head of the Board of Diaconate, and often gave the sermon in the pastor’s absence. He loved to read and collect books. His other interests included photography, painting portraits and landscapes, and carpentry.

He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who loved spending time with his family.

In celebration of his life, visitation will be from 9 am until the time of service at 10 am Monday July 23, 2012 at Staten-Fine Funeral Home, with Rev. Jerry  MeCaskey officiating.

Burial will follow at Upper Alton Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, the American Diabetes Association, or a charity of one’s choice.
