Gladys Marie Drainer, 83, died at 2:45 p.m., Friday, November 18, 2011 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. She was born in Otterville on Sept. 17, 1928, the last surviving of six children born to the late Lester & Blanche (Price) Cope.She married Marvin G. Drainer on Jan. 20, 1945 at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fieldon, and during their 57 years of marriage they raised seven children, and together as a family operated their family farm near Otterville for many years. Marvin passed away on Feb. 21, 2002.Gladys had a passion for Otterville, and instrumental in the formation of the Otter Creek Historical Society which was formed in December of 1998, and secured the Hamilton Primary School on the National Register in August of 1998. She served in many capacities throughout her life, presently serving as President of the Otter Creek Historical Society, served as an Jersey County Election Judge, served as a trustee for Otter Creek Township, and was currently serving on the Otter Creek Township Cemetery Board of Trustees on top of being a huge St. Louis Cardinals Fan.For 28 years, Gladys has served on the Hamilton Primary School Festival Board, ensuring that the school does not get forgotten, and serving as a reason for past & present members of the Otterville community to gather and reminence.Surviving are two daughters & a son in law, Janet & Oliver Ready and Mary Drainer all of Grafton; five sons & daughters in law, Terry & Debbie Drainer of Algonquin, Jerry & Faye Drainer of Konawa, Ok., Ed & Linda Drainer, Stan & Carol Drainer all of Jerseyville, and Randy & Darla Drainer of Grafton; eleven grandchildren & their spouses, Terra Farmer of Algonquin, Jennifer & Paul Kotlarz of West Dundee, Matt Drainer of Elgin, Misty & David Blumenstock of Alexandria, Mo., Brian & Kay Drainer of Union, Mo., David Drainer of Hollister, Mo., Hannah & John Wayman of Chesterfield, Stanely Drainer & Tess Drainer both of Jerseyville, Laura Drainer & Natalie Drainer both of Grafton; nine great grandchildren, Justin, Ryan, Jessica, Jordon, Charlie, Wyatt, Abby, Lauren, & Maggie; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a grandson, Timothy Watson on May 11, 2009; an infant granddaughter, Mary Blanche Drainer; a sister, Mariam Cope; and four brothers, Lester, Mark, Clyde and Paul Cope.Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, with Father William Hembrow officiating.Burial will be in the Drainer Addition of the McDow Cemetery near Otterville, and addition to the cemetery that was donated by her son & daughter in law, Stan & Carol.Memorials may be given to the Hamilton Primary School, the Otter Creek Cemeteries Perpetual Care Fund, or to Masses.
