Gerald M. Scroggins, 61, went to be with the Lord at 9:13 p.m. Wednesday, February 9, 2011 at his home in Bethalto, IL, surrounded by family and friends while under the care of hospice.
Jerry was born on August 3, 1949 in Litchfield, IL. He was the son of the late Leland W. Scroggins and Thelma M. (Dunham) Scroggins. He attended Mulberry Grove High School and graduated from SIUE with a Bachelors in Education and a Masters of Science in Environmental Science.
He married Debra J. (Hofgren) Scroggins on March 18, 1972, in Alton, IL. They were happily married for nearly 39 years. Jerry is survived by his wife Debbie; daughter Anna Durbin and her husband, Adam of Evansville, Indiana; son, Zachary Scroggins of Bethalto; and mother, Thelma. He is also survived by sister, Beverly Crandell of Mulberry Grove, IL; Brother-in-laws, Don Hofgren and Dennis Hofgren and his wife, Donna, all of Alton, IL. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews that he loved dearly.
He is preceded in death by his father, Leland; father and mother-in-law, Paul and Dorothy Hofgren; and brother, James Scroggins.
Jerry was an active member at the Main Street United Methodist Church in Alton, IL for many years as a Sunday school teacher. He served God by founding the Wheels of Hope Program and also helping to raise awareness for the House of Hope by serving as a board member. As a baseball fan, Jerry avidly supported the St. Louis Cardinals by being a season ticket holder for 28 years. Jerry was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Mulberry Grove, IL. While at SIUE, Jerry was a brother in Sigma Phi Epsilon.
Visitation will take place Sunday, Feb. 13 from 4-7 p.m. at Paynic Home for Funerals in Rosewood Heights, with service on Monday at Main Street United Methodist Church at 10 a.m. followed immediately by burial at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that all donations be sent to the Main Street United Methodist Church in Alton, IL or to the Community Hope Center in Cottage Hills, IL.
