Gerald “Jake” Francis Kalert, 91, of Mitchell, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, IL.
Born in Chester, Pennsylvania, on January 28, 1934, Jake was the cherished son of the late Ralph and Bernice (Goza) Kalert Sr. A proud veteran, Jake honorably served in the United States Navy, embodying the values of dedication and service that would define his life.
Jake retired from Granite City Steel in 1996 after 38 years of unwavering commitment and hard work. A man of many talents and passions, he was a proud member of the Granite City Elks Lodge #1063 and an enthusiastic participant in the Senior Olympics, where he was honored as the State of Illinois Athlete of the Year. In 1997, Jake was inducted into the Granite City Sports Hall of Fame for his outstanding contributions to wrestling and football—an achievement that reflected his lifelong love of sports and competition.
Beyond his accolades, Jake was a man who found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He had a deep love for fishing, woodworking, and exploring the beauty of the United States and worldwide through travel. But above all, Jake treasured his family. His heart belonged to those he loved, and time spent with them was his greatest joy.
Jake was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his siblings, Shirley Buesking, Ralph Kalert Jr., and Leonard Kalert.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 32 years, whom he married on August 28, 1992, Amy Kalert of Granite City, IL; his loving children, Michael (Gena Kay) Kalert of Bethalto, IL, Denise (Dave) Lofink of Granite City, IL, and David (Scott Eberhart) Kalert of Glen Carbon, IL; his beloved grandchildren, Steven Kalert, Melissa Sullivan, Maerhanda Rolens, and Jacob Kalert; his cherished great-grandchildren, Destiny, Joseph, Aubrey, and Paige; and two precious great-great-grandchildren, Addilyn and Teghan. Jake also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will miss his generous spirit, warm smile, and steadfast presence.
A celebration of Jake’s life will be held on Friday, June 13, 2025, at Irwin Chapel in Granite City, IL. Visitation will take place from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 1:00 p.m. officiated by Pastor Karla Frost. Jake will be laid to rest at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon, IL., with military honors conducted by the United States Navy.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Salvation Army. Donations will be accepted at the funeral chapel.
