Gerald “Jay” DeGerlia, 88, died at 3:35 a.m. Friday, November 9, 2012 at Alton Memorial Hospital.
Born April 14, 1924 in Kampsville, Calhoun County, IL, he was one of eleven children of Charles and Carrie (Smith) DeGerlia. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII where he received a Purple Heart and also served in the Korean War. He was a member of the VFW Post 1308, the Alton Eagles Foe No. 254, and the Korean War Veteran Association, Inc.
He retired from the St. Louis Post Dispatch. He married the former Garnetta Rain and she preceded him in death on January 15, 2003.
Surviving is a step-son, Frederick Grubb of Godfrey, one grandchild, Jamie DeGerlia, two great-grandchildren, Aiden Lee and Jacee, and several step grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren, one brother, Gilbert DeGerlia of Wood River, and his best friend, Arlene Marberry of Godfrey.
He was preceded in death by a son, Gerald “Jay” DeGerlia Jr., a step-daughter, Donna Segrest, four brothers, William Claude, Charles, Clyde and Luther DeGerlia, and five sisters, Lillian Williams, Minnie Carlton, Lena Pence, Alberta Webb and Betty Jane.
Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Monday, November 12, 2012 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton where funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 13, 2012. Reverend Steve Rice will officiate.
Burial will be at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey with full military honors by the VFW Post 1308.
