Gerald Baker of Godfrey, 81, formally of Alton, passed away at The Mercy Rehab

Hospital in Chesterfield, Missouri on June 25, 2013 as a result of complications

following  a fall at his home.

Mr. Baker was born in Alton in 1932 to Ruth (nee Miller) and Joseph Baker. He was

an only child.  He attended St Louis University and retired from government service.

He married Erkin (nee Cigir) of Istanbul Turkey in 1968 near Chicago.  They have one

daughter,  Jennifer Leyla Baker of St. Louis, formally of Alton.  Besides his wife and daughter,

he is  survived by several cousins in the area and also his in-laws who live in Turkey.

Mr. Baker suffered a plane crash in 1994 during a mission of mercy.  Otherwise, as he put

It, he had a “charmed life”.  He lived in various countries and traveled extensively with his family. 

Besides flying, he enjoyed hunting bears and fishing in Alaska.

He was a great husband and father, a Vietnam veteran, a devout Catholic, and an

exemplary American.

He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 pm Friday June 28, 2013 at Staten-Fine Funeral Home in Alton where a

Rosary service will be held at 7 pm.

A traditional Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 am Saturday June 29, 2013 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton with Fr. Kurtz celebrant.

Burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Alton.

Memorials may be made to: St. Mary’s Assumption Church in St. Louis or to a charity of one’s choice.
