George J. “Pitts” Campbell

George J. “Pitts” Campbell, age 85, passed away at 12:10 am Friday, July 29, 2011 at his residence.

He was born on March 20, 1926 in Pittsburg. PA the son of the late George J. and Elizabeth (Harrity) Campbell. 

George married Emma Frances Fleming on October 28, 1945 at the Lutheran Trinity Church in Alton.  She survives.

George worked as a truck driver for Alton Box Board from 1944 till 1969. He then became the Alton Township Assessor from 1969 till 1989 in Alton. George was of the Lutheran faith; he was an Alderman for Alton’s 4th ward for many years until 1969. He was a past member of the Alton Eagles F.O.E. 204, and a past president of the Toast Masters. He loved to work on old cars, travel, and collected camels as a hobby. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, and one son and his spouse; Darby and Peggy Campbell of Alton, IL, three grandchildren; Darby and his wife Jessica Campbell, of Jacksonville, FL. Brandon M. Campbell and Aubrey Weiss, of Las Vegas, NV. and Cydney Campbell and Jessie Wilson, of Jacksonville, FL. three great grandchildren; Evan Campbell, Presley Wilson and Madeline Doyle, and numerous nieces and nephews.


He was preceded in death by his parents; and seven sisters; Charlotte Coverston, Virginia Highland, Betty Deal, Mary Campbell, Gladys Nowack, Velma Veith and Alice House, three brothers; Nelson Campbell, Melvin Campbell, and Frank Campbell.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm, Tuesday August 2, 2011 at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton. Services will be at the funeral home on Wednesday August 3, 2011 at 10 am with the Pastor William Veith officiating.

Burial will follow at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey, IL

Memorials may be directed to American Diabetes Association, American Cancer Association or the American Heart Association.
