George Howard Smith,72, formerly of Springfield, died suddenly at 5:12 p.m., Tuesday, June 4, 2013 in the emergency room at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville. He was born in Springfield on June 13, 1940, and was the son of the late Howard J. & Georgetta E. (Bryant) Smith. George graduated from Cathedral High School in Springfield, and served his country with the U.S. Marine Corp. during the Vietnam War. He was employed as an Engineering Technician with Orange County in California, retiring after 32 years of dedicated service. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Jerseyville, Amvets, American Legion and the VFW all of Jerseyville. He enjoyed being with his wife, Jewell, and volunteering at the church and being with family and friends. He felt blessed to have met Jewell Lester of Jerseyville, and the two married on July 30, 2011, and although they were only granted a short time together, both feel fortunate to have been able to share in each others love. He is survived by four children and their spouses Stephanie A. Smith, Timothy Smith, Christopher & Theresa Smith, and Carol M. Smith; step children, Jim Trucano Harp, and his wife, Laura of Chicago, and Eric Harp of Dallas, Texas; three sisters and brothers in law, Margaret & Allen Stranigan, Dorothy & Donald Rogers, and Judy & Robert Ayers. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Kevin M. Smith; and three sisters, Nancy Dunn, Patsey Canaday, and Mary Ann Smith. Visitation will be fro 4 to 8 p.m., Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Jerseyville, where funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday. Rev. Mark Myers & Dennis Hill will officiate. Military honors will be conducted after the services by the Jerseyville American Legion Post 492. Burial will be at a later date at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church in Jerseyville or to the American Cancer Society.
