George “Fred” Fredrick Cowan, 90, passed away at 4:05 am Friday, June 24, 2011 at Barnes Jewish Hospital. He was born on December 29, 1920 in Winchester, IL the son of the late Joseph and Lillian (Leitze) Cowan.
He married E. Grace Disher on December 23, 1943 in Roxana, IL. Fred served in the United States Army in the 96th infantry division of the Deadeyes in World War II. He was a teamster/laborer for Hellrung Construction for 37 years and was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton where he worked for 20 years. He was the only one that held two union cards and was also a member of the Alton Eagles 254.
He is survived by his wife; eight children and their spouses: Joseph and Kelly Cowan of Imperial MO, Kevin and Sandy Cowan of Springfield IL, Mark and Co Cowan of Edwardsville, IL, Patrick and Julie Cowan of Alton IL, Mary Cowan of Alton IL, Robert and Marschel Cowan of Springfield MO, Damian Cowan of Belleville, IL, and Maureen Cowan of St. Louis MO; thirteen grandchildren: Sean and Robert and Kim Cowan, Derek and Aaron and Liz Cowan, Dustin and Shelley Cowan, Katie Roach, Anna Roach, Madelyn Cowan-Burch, Abby Cowan, Austin Cowan, Jacob Cowan, Brett Cowan, and Luke Cowan; and six great-grandchildren.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter Anne Marie Cowan, two infant sons, Joey and Freddie Cowan, two brothers, Joseph Cowan and Bill Cowan, and one sister Betty Guccione.
Per Fred’s wishes cremation rites were performed.
A Memorial Visitation will be held on Saturday July 2, 2011 from 9 am until time of Service at 11 am at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey, with Brother John Luong OMV officiating.
