George F. Crawford, 96, passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at his residence.

He was born in Ava, IL on August 25, 1916 the son of the late George E. and Nora (Fenn) Crawford.

He married his wife of 50 years, Wilma (Susie) Ruth Williamson, in Ava, IL on August 16, 1941.  

George was a Lineman and Electrician for AT&T and Illinois Bell for over 40 years and served in the Army Air Corps during WWII in Africa, Italy and Europe. He was the oldest member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, VFW Post 1308, Knights of Columbus and a Pioneer of America with Illinois Bell. He was an avid Cardinals fan who watched every game to make sure they won, and every Cubs game to make sure they lost. He got his most enjoyment from spending time with his grandchildren, great grandchildren, daughter, family and friends.

He is survived by one daughter and her spouse, Caren and Dr. Chris Carrow of Alton, IL; three grandchildren, Christopher and his spouse Lindsay Carrow of Des Moines, Iowa, Andrew Carrow of Chicago and Claire Carrow of Alton; two great grandchildren, Max and Gavin Carrow; a dear friend, Pearl Murphy of Alton; one sister, Hope Griffin of St. Louis, MO; along with nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Wilma.

Memorial visitation will be 9 am to 11 am on Friday, May 31, 2013 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton where Mass will begin at 11 am with Father Jim Walther OMV officiating.

Cremation rites will be accorded.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or Marquette Catholic Capital Campaign.

Military rites will be conducted by the Alton VFW Post 1308 Ritual Team.
