George Edward Strowmatt, 76, died Thursday, February 18, 2016 at Alton Memorial Hospital. He was born April 8, 1939 in Roodhouse, IL the son of the late Earl Waters and Martha (Elliott) Strowmatt. He retired in 1996 from Laclede Steel. He was a former member of Cherry Street Baptist Church. He also was a bus driver for Laid Law and was an avid camper and Scout master for troop #31. He loved deep sea fishing, enjoyed football and watching University of Illinois basketball and spending time with his family. On August 1, 1957 in Senatobia, MS he married Marlene (Hendrickson) and she survives. Also surviving are four children, Elizabeth Wilson (Jim) of Plainfield, IL, David Strowmatt (Melanie) of Alton, Annette Fletcher (Rich) of Godfrey and Janice Crosnoe (Ron) of Rosewood Heights, nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren with a 9th and 10th one on the way. Besides his parents he is preceded in death by one sister, Linda McCleery. Visitation will be Monday, February 22, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. until time of funeral service at 7:00 p.m. at Gent Funeral Home.
