George A. Clayton, 83, died at 4:25 p.m. Sunday, December 9, 2012 at his home. Born June 28, 1929 in Rushville, IL, he was the son of Arthur and Iva (Icenogle) Clayton. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the VFW Post 2859 in Wood River. He was also a member of the American Legion East Alton Post 794, and the Piasa Masonic Lodge #27 since 1963. In 1993 he retired from the metallic manufacturing department at the Olin Corporation. On August 31, 1956 he married Lois E. Meyer at Cherry Street Baptist Church in Alton. She preceded him in death on November 19, 2005. Surviving is a daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Keith Eyer of Bethalto, a grandson, Carson Eyer, one brother, James “Don” Clayton (Mary Jane) of Bethalto, and two sisters, Eva Bissell of Pensacola, FL, and Betty Kilmer (Allen) of Bethalto. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lloyd and Delbert Clayton, and two sisters, Lois Blurton and Dorothy Clayton. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 12, 2012 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton where funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 13, 2012. Reverend Andre’ Dobson will officiate. Burial will be at Upper Alton Cemetery with full Military Honors by the American Legion East Alton Post 794.
