Gene F. Spencer, 87, died at 10:46 p.m. Sunday, July 6, 2014 at St. Anthony’s Hospital. Born May 31, 1927 in Florida, he was the son of Frank and Olive Spencer. He was a police officer for the Alton Police Department and worked for Belle Street Key Service where he retired in 1997. He had also worked in auto sales and previously owned a gas station. He loved his computer and working as a handyman. There wasn’t much he couldn’t do or wouldn’t tackle. He was a Mason and a St. Louis Cardinal Baseball fan. In January 1951 he married the former Lois Haubs. She survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Victoria “Vikki” Whitten of Godfrey and Deborah Lara (John) of Marine, IL, a son, Steven A. Spencer of Wood River, three grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister-in-law, Pat Spencer and Jim and Florence Spencer, four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Doris and John Ulmrich, Harriet and Bill Cobb, Mary Spencer and Helen Spencer who died at the age of nine. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. There will be no services. Gent Funeral Home in Alton is in charge of arrangements.
