Garland Horn

Garland J. Horn, age 83, passed from this life a better one on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at 12:15 a.m. at Select Specialty Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. 

Garland was born June 8, 1940, in Menfro, Missouri, the son of the late Edwin and Bessie (Clifton) Horn. 

Garland is survived by Eva, his loving wife of 63 years, by his daughters and sons-in-law, Cynthia L. and Joseph Hall of Granite City and Kathleen A. and Joseph Barron of Maryville; his sister and brother-in-law, Myrna and Don Johnson of Granite City; his two grandsons, Joseph J. Hall and Jacob W. Hall; his three great-grandchildren, Maverick, Amelia and Merrick Hall; his many nieces; nephews; other extended family and friends. 

In addition to his parents, Garland was preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Horn. 

Garland was retired from National Steel as a Maintenance Repair Technician after more than 43 years of employment.  He was active in sports his entire life from age 16 to age 77, when he at last hung up his ball glove.  He played both fast pitch and slow pitch softball, (He was a fast pitch pitcher and usually played left field or shortstop in slow pitch) culminating in a 3rd place trophy in the National Senior Olympics held in Florida, with participants from all 50 states. 

He was also active in co-ed softball and co-ed volleyball with his wife, both daughters, both sons-in-law and both grandsons. He also served as a softball umpire for 25 years. 

Garland was very active in church, teaching an adult Sunday School Class at Calvary Baptist Church in Granite City, as well as singing solos, a member of praise teams and choirs.  He was a member of the Master’s Voice Choir in Granite City, which consisted of members from approximately 25 churches in the area. 

Previously he served as a board member of the Mitchell Water Board and as a board member of Processors Credit Unions, which is now Midwest Members Credit Union.  He also serves as an election judge in both local and national elections. 

Garland’s life was truly a life well-lived and he will be missed very much by countless family members and friends. 

In celebration of his life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City on Thursday, February 8, 2024, from 10 a.m. until time of a funeral service at noon with Reverend Wesley Hahn officiating. 

Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon. 

Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church and may be accepted at the funeral chapel.
