It is with deep sorrow and love that we announce the passing of Frederick Leland Wheeler Jr., 72, of Bethalto Illinois on February 5, 2025. Fred was born on April 21, 1952 to Nancy Estelle Wheeler and Frederick Leland Wheeler Sr., both proceeded him in death. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.
Fred was the brother of Gary Wheeler, Karen Peter, Beth Ann Wheeler, James Wheeler, and Mark Wheeler. He graduated from Bunker Hill High School and later attended Lewis and Clark Community College. His devotion to his community and country was evident in both his professional career and his service in the military. Fred proudly served in the United States Army, stationed overseas in Europe, and continued his commitment to public service as a police officer and firefighter for St. Louis.
Fred married his wife Cindy on October 1, 1983, and together they built a life filled with love, faith, and family. He is survived by his daughter Heather Claxton and son-in-law Tanor Claxton, as well as granddaughter Sable Snyder (Jimmy), and great grandson, Dorian Leland Raymond Snyder. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter London Risch.
Fred was a devoted man, always putting his loved ones first and working tirelessly to provide a good life for them. His faith in God was his anchor, and he remained an active member and dedicated member of several church communities in St. Louis, Springfield, and Alton. His strength, kindness, and unwavering dedication to both his family and his service to others made him a beloved figure in the lives of those who knew him. Fred was deeply proud of his service to both his country and his community. He will be remembered for his unwavering fortitude, his devotion to his faith, and the lasting impact he made on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A service will be held at Community Christian Church on Union School Road in Alton Saturday February 8, 2025 with visitation at 2 p.m. and a service will follow.
