Frederick Luther "Fred" Armstrong, 84, died at 10:00 p.m., Sunday, May 29, 2011 at St. Louis University Hospital.He was born in Jersey County on Aug. 18, 1926, the son of the late Earl & Ruth (Brainerd) Armstrong.Fred served his country with the U.S. Army/Air Corp. and was stationed in Germany during World War II. He was a lifetime member of both the Grafton American Legion 648 and Alton VFW Post 1308, and was a retiree from the State of Illinois where he worked in maintenance with the Department of Conservation.He married the former Shirley (Hodge) Plummer on Jan. 29, 1955 in the rectory of St. Patricks Catholic Church in Grafton, and together they have shared 56 years together.In addition to his wife, surviving are a son & daughter in law, Frank David & Rhonda Plummer of Jerseyville; two daughters & a son in law, Shirley & Richard Gallegos of Grafton, and Nancy Wendle of Godfrey; eight grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; three sisters, Norma Delp of Texas, Georgia Foster of New Boston, Il., and Deanna Harper of Davenport, Ia.He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Doris Roberson; and three brothers, Arthur Armstrong, Kenneth Armstrong, and Franklin "Cork" Armstrong.Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.Visitation will continue from 10 a.m. Thursday until time of funeral mass at 11 a.m., at the St. Patricks Catholic Church in Grafton with Father Patrick Gibbons officiating.He will be laid to rest at the Scenic Hill Cemetery in Grafton, with military rites conducted by the Grafton American Legion Post 648.Memorials may be given to the Salvation Army in recognition of all their assistance during the floods of Grafton or to St. Patricks Catholic Church in Grafton.
