Frederick Dale Mortland, 90, died at 2:47 a.m. Monday, August 17, 2015 at Rosewood Care Center in Alton. Born August 7, 1925 in Batchtown, IL he was the son of Wilson and Louise (Eilerman) Mortland. He was confirmed at Batchtown Lutheran Church. He was drafted in 1944 to the U.S. Army and went to Basic Training at Camp Croft, South Carolina. He served 18 months in Italy for the 10th Mount Division, Declaration 1945, 215th MVP Company. He worked for the Granite City Army Depot from 1954-1970 and for Defense Mapping in St. Louis from 1970-1971. He then worked at the United States Federal Building in Alton as supervisor from 1972 until he retired in 1985. He also owned and operated a farm in Batchtown since 1970. Mr. Mortland was active in the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 1, was a life member of the VFW Post 1308, a life member of AARP (American and Retired People), a life member of the Franklin Masonic Lodge #25, and the Easter Star #990. On April 15, 1950 he married the former Una Dell Fowler at Calvary Baptist Church in Alton. She preceded him in death on February 3, 1991. Surviving are four children, Russell Dale Mortland (Tina) of Texas, Deborah Louise Nichols (Bryan) of Roxana, Steven Arthur Mortland (Sheila) of Jerseyville, and Mariann Kay Crane of Dow, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister, Faye Hackethal (Hank) of Edwardsville, and a brother, Robert Mortland of Godfrey. Along with his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Earl and Roger Mortland. Mr. Mortland enjoyed spending time with veterans and helping them and their families. He enjoyed telling stories about growing up in the depression and farming, and his experience in the U.S. Army. He enjoyed retirement and spending time with his family. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. with a Masonic service at 6:00 p.m. Friday, August 21, 2015 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton where funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 22, 2015. Reverend Dr. Glen Greenwood will officiate. Burial will be at Rose Lawn Memory Garden in Bethalto with full military honors by the VFW Post 1308.
