Freda J. Staats, 91, died at 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO. Born February 9, 1924 in White Hall, IL, she was the daughter of Fred and Cora (Summers) Berthlett. Mrs. Staats was a homemaker and a member of the Community Christian Church in Alton. She was a loving mother and grandmother as well as strong, spunky and very witty. On June 26, 1941 she married Roy A. Staats in St. Charles, MO. He preceded her in death on March 4, 1991. Surviving are two daughters, Virginia Kay Nash (Jack) of Jerseyville and Pamela Sue Young (Kevin) of Clinton, MO, a daughter-in-law Rose Staats of Brighton, five grandchildren, Robert Staats of Wood River, Chuck Porter of Alton, Darren Nash of Jerseyville, Melissa Allison (Kyle) of Jerseyville, and Sarah Lewis (Josh) of Wood River, 14 great grandchildren, Christopher (Brooke) Staats, Lyndsy Staats, Carter Allison, Makayla Allison, Emily Nash, Mitchell Nash, Griffin Nash, Heather (Brandon) Sweitzer, Bradly Porter, Ryan Porter, Jessica Porter, Nichole Porter, Isaac Lewis and Malina Lewis. Also surviving are four great grandchildren, Luxlin Staats, Wyatt Blumenberg, Julina Sweitzer, and Astina Sweitzer. Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Merle Staats, a brother, Ronald Dawson, and three sisters, Virginia Thomas, Claudine Petrick, and Myrtle Webb. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, January 22, 2016 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton where funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 23,2 016. Reverend David Berger will officiate. Burial will be at White Hall Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Community Christian Church. Online guestbook and information may be found at
