Eugene T. Weigler passed away Wednesday, March 30, 2011, at his Alton home in the loving care of his wife of 49 years. He was 82 years old. Born February 1, 1929, in Alton, he was the youngest of four and the only son of John and Lima Weigler.
He graduated from Alton Senior High School in 1947 where he played baseball for the school as well as for various local organizations. In December of 1950 he entered military service, serving as a corporal with the United States Army stationed in Korea until September of 1952. In 1961 Eugene met and fell in love with Carol Barger, also a native of Alton. They were married on December 31, 1961, by Rev. Robert Kemper at the Congregational Church. Eugene had two stepchildren, William Barger and Pat (Gary) Cook of Virginia. Eugene and Carol also had a son John Thomas Weigler. Eugene worked for Olin Corporation in East Alton for 25 years before retiring. He also worked for the Salvation Army for ten years. Eugene was active in serving as a coach for the Yankee Little League at the Alton Park and Recreation Department. He also was Cub Master for the Boy Scout Troop at the Elm Street Presbyterian Church in Alton.
Eugene is survived by two sisters: Norma Mae Selllier in Florida and Virginia Bond of Alton. His nieces include Deborah Quigley, Carol Sue (George) Hailer, Sharon (Butch) Yakubovich, and Rita Teague. His nephews are Charles (Nadene) Schildroth, Ronald (Jeanette) Schildroth, Richard Schildroth, Leonard and (Mary) Schildroth, John and (Janet) Schildroth, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Schildroth, Tom and (Karen) Dickmann, Jeff and (Debbie) Bond as well as several great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. A kind and gentle soul, he leaves his cherished memories to his surviving family which include his wife Carol, his children William, Pat, and John, daughter-in-law Lori, and his three grandchildren Emily (Patrick) Holleman, Jonathan Thomas Weigler, and Amanda Ann Weigler.
Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until time of funeral service at 7:00 p.m. Friday at Gent Funeral Home in Alton.
Graveside services will be at 12:00 noon Saturday at Upper Alton Cemetery with full military honors by the VFW Post 1308. Reverend Randy Fischer will officiate.
