Emil Kittel

Emil Kittel, 88, of Alton, died at 12:37 p.m. Saturday December 11, 2010 at Alton Memorial Hospital. He was born May 19, 1922 in Venice, IL to the late Frank and Ludie (Burgner) Kittel.  Emil was a U.S. Army veteran serving in WWII. He retired from Owens-Illinois after 35 years of service.  He was inducted into the Venice Sports Hall of Fame by the Venice History Committee in 2009 for his high school athletic accomplishments in track.  He was an active amateur radio operator for more than 50 years and his call sign was K9PPT.  He found relaxation in photographing nature, especially bluebirds and flowers.  He enjoyed country dancing and world-wide travel with his late wife Bernadine. 

He is survived by his son; Jack (Marlene) Kittel of Hebron, KY;  his brother John (Rosina) Kittel of Edwardsville, IL; and sister Terri Chambers of Parkville, Mo. Also surviving are his three grandchildren; Kristen (Keith) Farrell of North East, PA, Marissa (Chris) Kittel of Mason, OH, and Jack (Sarah) Kittel of Denver, CO;  two step-daughters, Sherry (Lou) Reddo of Godfrey, IL and Kay (Charlie) Landers of Bunker Hill, IL; three step-grandchildren, Jana (Mike) O’Neill of Alton, IL, Stacy (Michael) Keshner of Godfrey, IL and Craig Landers of Mountain View, CA as well as two step-great-grandchildren, Aiden Keshner and Colin O’Neill.  Emil is preceded in death by his wife of 31 years Bernadine (Cooper) Jaynes Kittel who passed away on July 19, 2010.  He is also preceded by his first wife Jean (Shankel) Kittel; brothers, Frank and Carl; and sisters, Lucille Kornek and Agnes Ellinwood. 

Friends may call from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Thursday, December 16th, 2010 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton where funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 17th, 2010. 

Burial will follow immediately at Valhalla Memorial Park, Godfrey, IL with full military honors by the VFW Post 1308.  Father Steve Pohlman will officiate. 

Memorials may be made to the Boy Scouts of America.
