Elizabeth A. “Betty” Thien, 79, of Greenfield, passed away Thursday, March 20, 2025, surrounded by her family, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. She was born June 18, 1945, in Carrollton, the daughter of Adam and Catherine (Behnen) Nord. She married John B. Thien, November 21, 1964 at St. John’s Church in Carrollton, and he survives.

Also surviving are her daughters, Linda Austin (friend Bobby) of Collinsville, Julie (Steven) Caselton of Carrollton, her sons, Kenny (Donna) Thien of Wrights, and Jeffrey (DeAnna) Thien of Glasgow, KY., her grandchildren, Brandi (Nathan) Jeffers, Randi Thien (Justin Decker), Tori (Jacob) Lovel, Maxwell Thien, Madilynn Thien, Marshall Thien, and Ruthie Thien, her great-grandchildren, Sophie, Rylie, Andrew, Landon, and Lyndy, a sister, Mary Gillingham, and sister-in-law, Carol Nord, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Joe Nord, a son-in- law, Lance Austin, and her twin grandsons, Kevin and Kyle Thien.

Betty was a 1963 graduate of Greenfield High School. She worked for many years at Search’s IGA in Greenfield and was an active member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and Greenfield Lions Club. She enjoyed working for the City of Greenfield maintaining the facilities at Rives Lake and Lions Park. She also enjoyed riding the golf cart and sitting in the backyard swing with John.

Visitation will be from 4 until 7 pm on Monday evening at St. Michael’s Church in Greenfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, March 25, at 10:30 am at the church. Burial will follow the mass at St. John’s cemetery in Carrollton. In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to Greenfield Lions Club or to the family.
