Elizabeth Harford “Betty” Pars, 90, passed away peacefully at 2:16 AM on Monday, April 18th, 2011 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, with her daughter, Julie, by her side.

She was born on February 10th, 1921 in Alton Illinois and was the daughter of the late Harold Harford and Margaret (Reubel) Harford of Alton.

Her marriage to her beloved husband, Zip, on November 22nd, 1943 survived until his death on April 19th, 2003.

In addition to her parents and husband, Betty was preceded in death by her daughter, Libby Pars, her niece, Lloyd Vahle, two sisters, Jacqueline Vahle and Phyllis Rice and her brother, Roger Harford.

Betty was educated at Monticello College in Godfrey, Illinois. She enjoyed a long career teaching dance at Monticello, Lewis and Clark Community College and at the Alton YWCA. She choreographed many shows at Alton High School and throughout the Alton Area. More than a teacher and choreographer, Betty was a loving friend and mentor to her many students.

Betty is survived by her family and extended family.
She was known as “Great Betty” to her great grandchildren Jackson, Rebecca, Mikaela, Sean, Natalia, Olivia and Smudge.

She was also known as “B”, Betty, Betty Boop and Grandma by her grandchildren and their spouses:
MacKenzie Cadenhead and Dan Buckley, Stuart Cadenhead and Amy Blackwell of Hastings-on-Hudson, New York; Bruce and Jennifer Cadenhead of Dobbs Ferry, New York; Rachael and Patricio Cordero of O’Fallon, Missouri and Jonathan Weaver of St. Charles, Missouri.

Betty will be deeply missed by her extended family, whom she loved, Larry Weaver, Susie Walker, Doris, Don, Robert and Tyler Poynton, Harry Rice, her sister-in-law Margarita Tsouderos and her family, Virginia and Manolis Tsouderos and Maria Love and all the Pars, Vahle, Kodros relatives and her loving friends and neighbors.

Betty’s daughter, Julie and son-in-law Ian Cadenhead of New York City, are grateful for the many happy years Betty shared with all of her dear friends and family.

Visitation will be from 9 am until time of funeral services at 11 am Thursday April 21, 2011 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Alton with Fr. David Boase officiating.

Burial will follow at Upper Alton Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Oasis Crisis Center or 5A’s.
