Edward Walker Keller, 93, died at 4:00 a.m. Monday, May 9, 2011 at Eunice C. Smith Nursing Home in Alton. Born July 16, 1917 in Elsah, IL, he was the son of Lawrence and Emily (Walker) Keller. Mr. Keller served in the U.S. Army in America and Europe during WWII. He was a member of the Piasa Lodge and the Ainad chapter of Shriners. He was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Alton since 1961 and served as a Trustee and Deacon. He was the owner of J.K. Keller & Son grocery in Elsah and also served as Mayor of Elsah until 1970. He was also owner of J.K. Keller & Son electric Motors. Mr. Keller volunteered and served on the board at the Alton Museum of History & Art. He was active with the Alton/Godfrey and East Alton Rotary Clubs and was a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow Award. He also volunteered at Friends of The Hayner Public Library, and the information desk at Alton Memorial Hospital for 25 years. On August 4, 1961 he married the former Eugenia Delano at the First Presbyterian Church in Alton. She survives. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence and Russell Keller and two sisters, Gennieve Keller Murphy and Mary Margaret Keller. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Alton. Reverend David Crowley will officiate. Family will greet friends in the fireside room after the service. Burial will be private at the Upper Alton Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Edward and Genie Keller Scholarship Fund at Hayner Library. Gent Funeral Home in Alton is in charge of arrangements.
