Edward A. Knight

Edward A. Knight, 99, passed away after a short illness at 12:10 p.m., Sunday, December 5, 2010 at Jerseyville Manor Nursing Home.


Ed was born on November 25, 1911 at Hamburg, the oldest son of Chester A. & Lena (Dirksmeyer) Knight, and they preceded him in death. He married Alberta E. Ruyle on Feb. 11, 1941 in St. Louis, Mo., and she preceded him in death on Feb. 4, 1999. Ed was an orchadist for many years in Calhoun County.  He and Alberta moved to Jerseyville in 1963.  Ed continued his livestock brokerage until he passed the age of 98.  He had an excellent memory until his death.  He loved to tell stories of the past and entertain family and friends at gatherings.  Ed loved his family and had many friends.  He cherished his two daughters, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren, and was a member of the Church of Christ.


Surviving are his two beloved daughters, Linda Russell, and her husband Robert of Godfrey and Carol Genz of Godfrey;  Five Grandchildren, Tanya Downing, and her husband, Tom of St. Charles, Mo., Dr. Trent Russell, and his wife, Julie of Eldon, Mo., Lisa Shaw and her husband, Dave, of Eureka, Mo., Kurt Genz and his wife, Susie of Imperial, Mo.,  and Todd Russell, and his wife, Jennifer of Godfrey; 10 Great Grandchildren, Parker, Grant, Hunter, Forrest and Lane Russell, Ashely & Emily Shaw, and Bradley, Aaron & Tyler Genz; two step grandchildren, Amy & Cory Vollmer; one sister, Alberta Capps, and her husband, Carl of Brighton; one nephew, Donald Capps, and his wife, Marty of Brighton; one niece, Mickey Sue Lower of Bloomington; and a good friend and caretaker, Carol Reno.


He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two sisters, Hilda Oettle and Doris Knight; two brothers, John Knight and Howard Knight.


Ed willed his body to St. Louis University School of Medicine.


Memorial visitation will begin at 2 p.m., Sunday, with a Celebration of Life Service at 3 p.m. on Sunday, December 12, 2010 at Westlake Country Club, 998 Westlake Drive, Jerseyville, IL. 62052 , 618 498 2011.


The family would like to give special thanks to Jersey Community Hospital and to Jerseyville Manor Nursing Home for the kind and wonderful care given to Ed.
