Edna M. Richey, 98, died at 6:00 a.m. Sunday, January 3, 2016 at Rosewood Care Center in Alton. Born March 1, 1917 in Otterville, IL, she was the daughter of Edward J. and Claudia I. (Balcom) Varney. She married Leonard E. Richey on June 29, 1940 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Alton. He preceded her in death on March 16, 2005. Mrs. Richey was a short order cook at Richey’s Café in Alton, Bowl Haven, Godfrey Bowling Alley and at Monticello College Cabin. She retired in 1960 to become a homemaker. She was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey. Surviving are two daughters, Kaye Hurst-Yale of Bethalto and JoAnn and Don Erthal of Godfrey, two sons, Timothy Richey of Alton and Lenny Patrick Richey of Godfrey, three grandchildren, Donald and Lisa Erthal, Jill Richey and Todd Honchell, and Tiffany Richey and Ben Lubinski. Also surviving are five great grandchildren, Austin Erthal, Jonathan Erthal, Abbigail Powers, Jace Honchell and Josie Honchell. Along with her parents and husband she was preceded in death by a son-in-law Buddy Yale, two daughters-in-law Mary Ann Losch-Richey and Janice Ritter-Richey, a brother John Varney and a sister Thelma Fischer. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until time of mass of Christian burial at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church. Father Steve Pohlman will officiate. Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Ambrose School or the St. Ambrose School playground fund.
