Douglas C. Smith

Douglas C. Smith, 84, passed away at 11:17am on Monday, October 24, 2011, at St. Anthony's Hospital in Alton.  He was born on December 29, 1926, in Cape Girardeau, Missouri the son of the late Carl J. and Mary A. (Weiss) Smith.  He married the former Ruthagene Davis and they later divorced.  He then married Lorna Parish on December 23, 1958, and she preceded him in death on October 21, 1986.  Survivors include four daughters and two sons in law: Suzi White of Sacramento, California, Nancy and Mike Maring of Chehalis, Washington, Debi Antonio of Roseburg, Oregon, Sherrie and Danie Dorman of Bethalto, Illinois, seven grandchildren: Sharday White, John Rose, Shelia Rose, Lily Maring, Angelo Antonio, Holly Dorman and her fiance: Chris Deardeuff of Bethalto, and Matthew Dorman of Bethalto, several great grandchildren.

He owned and operated Wood River Gas and Appliance in Alton for over 25 years.  He was active in gemstone faceting, he was involved with various rock organizations.  He was a veteran of the United States Navy where he was a Tin Can Sailor.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lorna, one sister: Jackie Sexton, and his companion: Wilma E. Lintz.

In celebration of his life, visitation will be from 4pm to 7pm on Thursday, October 27, 2011 at Pitchford Funeral Home in Wood River.  Funeral services will be held at 1pm on Friday, October 28, 2011 at the funeral home.  Walter McCaslin will officiate.  Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto with full military honors by the Ritual Ream of VFW Post 1308.
