Dorothy Mae (Stucker) Gardner Allen

TAYLORVILLE - Dorothy Mae Allen, 97, formerly of Jerseyville, died at 11:50 p.m., Sunday, August 12, 2018 at Meadow Manor Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Taylorville.

She was born in Jacksonville on December 17, 1920, the second child born to the late Roy and Virnel (Allen) Stucker.

She married Ted Gardner and together they had two children, David and Mary.

She later married Jesse Wesley Allen on June 30, 1949 at the United Methodist Church in Jerseyville, and together their marriage was blessed with 50 years together and many shared memories with one another before his death on November 8, 1999.

Dorothy began her working career at the International Shoe Factory in Jerseyville and followed the plant with its move to Saint Louis, MO. Upon her retirement, she began working independently, cleaning home for area residents in and around Jerseyville.

Dorothy and Wes lived a full life, centered on family and their love of traveling. They traveled to California often, visiting their son while he was stationed there serving with the United States Military, and later to visit their daughter after she relocated to the area.

After Wes's passing, Dorothy moved to Divernon, where she lived with her son and daughter in law. She also continued her love of traveling, often accompanying her daughter as she traveled as on over the road truck driver.

She later made the transition to a Supportive Living facility, where she enjoyed the activities and day trips that she was able to be a part of. After suffering a fall in 2016, she became a resident at Meadow Manor Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Taylorville, where she has remained for past 2 years.

Dorothy was fortunate to live a very long and full life, and leaves behind many relatives who will remember her with love.

Surviving are a daughter, Mary (Gardner) Retherford Russell of Delta, CO; a daughter in-law, Kathryn Gardner of Divernon; six grandchildren and their spouses, Terry and Trish Retherford of Escondido, CA; Susan Retherford , and her fiance, Joe of Delta, CO; Richard and Trish Russell of Delta, CO; Joseph and Tina Gardner of Glenarm, IL; Keri and Chris Newenham Of Divernon; Tami Gardner of Waupaca, WI; eighteen great-grandchildren; twenty one great-great-grandchildren; three brothers and their spouses, Bill and Glenna Stucker of Jerseyville; Ed Stucker of White Hall and Walter and Marilyn Stucker of Alton; a sister in-law, Francis Stucker; a granddaughter in-law, Teri Retherford of Delta, CO; as well as several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, David Gardner; two son in ?laws, Jimmy Retherford Sr. and James Russell; a grandson, Jimmy Retherford Jr.; two brothers and sisters in-law, John Stucker and Junior and Betty Stucker; as well as three sisters and their spouses, Bessie and Milford Filkin; Helen Surratt Owens and Nellie and Harry Meyers; as well as a sister in-law, Carol Stucker.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of funeral services at 1 p.m., Monday, August 20, 2018 at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.

Burial will take place at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the family in care of Crawford Funeral Home.
