Dorothy Reid

Alton |

Dorothy Kathleen Norman Reid, 93, died at 10:20 a.m. Friday, August 12, 2011 at Alton Memorial Hospital.  She resided in Ft. Myers, Florida for the past 15 years.  Born September 19, 1917 in Alton, she was the daughter of Joseph Charles and Mable C. (Carhart) Norman.

Dorothy was the youngest of nine children (Charles, Ranaldo, Glorine, Mary Louise, Marvin “Jack”, William “Bill”, Otero, and Irene).  She was raised where Norman’s landing is located long before there was a river road.  One of Dorothy’s daily chores as a young girl was tending buoys and navigational lights for river traffic.  It was tending those same lights years later that caused the death of Dorothy’s first husband John Doyle Helm. Dorothy was one of a group of women who were responsible for having a stop light installed at Godfrey Grade School.  Dorothy was also a Red Cross volunteer nurse during WWII.

She is survived by her sons John Charles Helm of Ft. Myers, FL, Robert William Reid of Grand Haven, MI, two granddaughters Debbie Brynteson, Westminster, CO, Traci Helm-Woods of Alton, four great grandchildren Nicole, Jonathan, Ethan, and Emily and two great great-grandchildren Taylor and Elisabeth.  Dorothy was preceded in death by her first husband John Doyle Helm and her second husband Dr. deLafayette Reid as well as her brothers and sisters.

No memorial service is planned.  Donations may be made to the Oasis Woman’s Center of Alton.  Gent Funeral Home in Alton is in charge of arrangements.
