Dorothy “June” Rose Oertel, 88, of Brighton, Illinois passed away on September 24, 2010 at Rosewood Care Center in Alton, Illinois. She was born in Jerseyville, Illinois on November 24, 1921 to Charles H. Rose Sr. and Elsie Hartman Rose. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters (Marjorie Evans and Rosemary Barcelona) three brothers (Charles, Herbert, and William) and three great-grand children (Abbey, Ellie and Aidan Gargac). She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Leland, daughter Sharon (Hal) Hogan and sons Frank (Bonnie) and Allen (Joyce), four grandchildren (Jason Oertel Jenny Gargac, Phillip Oertel, Sam Oertel) and five great-grandchildren (Alex, Tatiana and Wil Gargac and Tyson and Shelby Oertel).
June was a 1940 graduate of Alton High School and was one of the original “Rosie The Riveter” during WWII working on the ammunition line at the Western Cartridge. When she worked there she was introduced to her future husband Leland, to whom she was wed on April 7, 1945. A city girl, she became an accomplished farm wife and was active in her church, children's activities and community events. She was a skilled hand quilter and made many gorgeous quilts that will serve to keep her family warm for generations to come.
