Donald Welborn

Donald E. Welborn, 87, of Edwardsville, Illinois, passed away on Thursday, September 7, 2023, at 6:17 p.m. at Anderson Hospital in Maryville. Born on April 25, 1936, in Granite City, he was the son of the late Netter “Jack” Welborn and Nellie (Gosnell) Sharpe. On October 6, 1973, he married Joyce Ann (Evans) Welborn in Granite City, who survives him. Don retired as a Yardmaster in 1996 after over 38 years of dedicated service with the Terminal Railroad Association. A United States Army veteran, he served his country proudly during the Vietnam War.

Don also volunteered for 20 years with the Anderson Hospital Auxiliary and was a faithful member of the Edwardsville Masonic Lodge #0099 in Glen Carbon. His hobbies included tinkering in his basement workshop, yard work, and landscaping. An avid reader, Don enjoyed going to movies and spending quality time with his grandkids and great-grandkids. He leaves behind a legacy of love and special moments shared with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, two daughters and a son-in-law, Jennifer Haring of Edwardsville and Julie and Tony Griffin of Houston, Texas. He also leaves behind three grandchildren, Whitney Davis, Jordan and Jordan Huber, and Luke and Aly Griffin, as well as five great-grandchildren, Kaylee Shoffner, Emma Edwards, Gracie Oliver, Lexi Griffin, and Gunner Huber. Other survivors include his sister-in-law, Becky Welborn of Springfield, Missouri; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Judy and Ken Goodner of Rockport, Texas; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bill and Diane Evans of Maryville. He had nieces, nephews, other extended family, and friends.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were a grandson, Wesley Ryan Haring; a great-granddaughter, Chloe Welch; and a brother, Dwaine “Gary” Welborn. A visitation and funeral service to celebrate Don's life will be held at Irwin Chapel, 591 Glen Crossing Road in Glen Carbon, on Thursday, September 14, 2023. Visitation starts at 10:00 a.m., and the funeral service will begin at 11:30 a.m., officiated by Reverend Sharon Autenrieth. Following the service, he will be buried with full military honors at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon.
