Donald Lee Schaaf, 69, died suddenly at 10:28 p.m., Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at Jersey Community Hospital after suffering an apparent heart attack.He was born in Fieldon on May 28, 1945, and was one of eight children born to Julius "Dude" & Cora Alice (Ford) Schaaf.Don was a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran and began working for Olin when he returned home.   He then began working at Sauerwein Lumber in Fieldon, and eventually went to Ropers Plastic in Jerseyville, where he served as plant manager until its acquisition by US Can.  He then returned to Olin in 1998, where he remained until retiring in 2010.He married the former Barbara Plummer on Oct. 1, 1965 at the Methodist Parsonage in Grafton, and together they have shared the last 49 years together.Surviving are his wife, Barbara Schaaf of Fieldon; two sons & a daughter in law, Timothy & Denise Schaaf of Godfrey and Rodney Schaaf, and his companion, Shannon Wittman of Fieldon; four grandchildren, Daniel, Grayson, Gavin & Owen; two sisters & a brother in law, Judy & Jerry Roth of Fieldon, and Carol Barnett of Mt. Sterling; three brothers & sisters in law, Charles & Edna Schaaf of Fieldon, Kenneth "Bill" & Alice Schaaf of Jerseyville, and James & Marcia Schaaf of Griggsville.He was preceded in death by his father, Julius Schaaf; his mother & step father, Cora Alice & Glenn Varble; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Schaaf on Aug. 6, 2013; and two brothers, Russell Schaaf and Robert Schaaf.Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., Friday at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m., Saturday.  Rev. Barbara Alley will officiate.Burial will be in the Fieldon Cemetery with the Tri County Honor Guard conducting military graveside rites.Memorials may be given to the Fieldon United Church of Christ.
