Donald Lee Hansel, age 85, of Edwardsville, Illinois, passed away on Tuesday, August 24, 2021, at his residence. He was born December 5, 1935, in Alton, Illinois, the son of the late Max & Eunice (Schmidt) Hansel.
Don worked at McDonnell Douglas & Boeing Company in St. Louis, for over 40 years as a sheet metal worker before retiring in 1998. While working there he had the privilege of working on the first space shuttle.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years Shirley A. (Davis) Hansel. They were married on November 19, 1955, at the First Baptist Church in Edwardsville. Don is also survived by two sons, Jeff Hansel of Troy, Illinois, Todd Hansel & wife Kristen of Edwardsville; daughter, Cheryl Smith of Edwardsville; ten grandchildren, Amy Appel & husband Derick, Stacy Rogers & husband Dan, Tim Hansel & wife Kim, Brett Hansel & wife Crystal, Doug Hansel & wife Hayley, Nicole Tedder, James Williams & wife Leslie, Amber Wheeler & husband Joe, Cole Hansel, Trent Hansel; twenty-one great-grandchildren; brother, Walter Max Hansel of Florida; & one sister Maxine Guyman & husband Richard of Jerseyville, Illinois; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene Hansel, Robert Hansel; sister Carol Sue Hansel; and a daughter-in-law Kathy Hansel.
Don was an avid baseball fan, he loved watching baseball, whether it was the Cardinals or the little leaguers.
Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, August 30, 2021, at Weber & Rodney Funeral Home in Edwardsville. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 31, at the funeral home, with Rev. Robert McNutt officiating. Burial will be at Valley View Cemetery in Edwardsville.
