Donald Hill

Alton |

Donald Eugene Hill, 90, passed away on Thursday, September 26, 2024 in the Emergency Room at Alton Memorial Hospital in Alton, Illinois.

Born on April 25, 1934 in Waynesville, Missouri, Donald was the eldest son of ten children born to Jesse and Geneva (Miller) Hill. He spent his formative years outside of Nebo, Illinois, where he learned the value of hard work early on while assisting on the family farm.

He devoted 44 years of his life working for Olin Corporation in the Casting Department, where he operated the gauge saw. His dedication and work ethic were a testament to his strong character and commitment to providing for his family.

In his personal life, Don first married Ernestine “Sue” Powell, and together they raised four children. They began their journey in Kampsville, Illinois before settling in Jersey County, where they built a life centered on love, faith and family. After 33 years of marriage, Sue passed away on December 15, 1987.

On December 8, 1990, Don married Joyce Nash at the Open Door House of Praise in Jerseyville, Illinois. Together, they shared many wonderful years of marriage, residing mostly in Jersey County before moving to Alton 13 years ago. Throughout his life, Don found joy in the simple pleasures, especially hunting, fishing, and sharing stories and making memories with his grandchildren.

Don was a devoted and faithful member of Open Door House of Praise, where his deep love for his church was evident. He took great pride in helping with the construction of the new church building, a testament to his hands-on nature and desire to contribute to the community he loved.

Don is survived by his wife of nearly 34 years, Joyce Hill of Alton; three children, Sheila Bowers and her companion, Joe Kanallkan of Fieldon, Terry Hill of Fieldon and Jameson Hill of New York; five grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren; his siblings, Maybell Thomas of Pleasant Hill, Robert (Carla) Hill of Nebo, Lyle (Peggy) Hill of Pittsfield, Mary Jane Watts of Pekin, Linda (Gary) Crowder of Springfield, Bobby (Jean Ann) Hill of Nebo and Roy (Debbie) Hill of Pittsfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Geneva Hill; his wife wife, Sue Hill; his beloved daughter, Donna Hoots; as well as two brothers, Loren Edward Hill in infancy and Lloyd Hill.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m., Tuesday, October 1, 2024 at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 10 a.m., Wednesday, at Open Door House of Praise in Jerseyville, where Don was a devoted member.

He will be laid to rest at Summit Grove Cemetery in Kampsville.
