Dennis L. Starkey, 69 , passed away at 4:15 p.m. on Monday, December 13, 2010, at his residence with his loving family by his side. He was born on July 16, 1941, in Higbee, Missouri the son of the late Lee Roy and Flora Ella (Ancell) Starkey. He married the former Colleen Dotson on April 20, 1962, in Wood River and she survives. Other survivors include one daughter and son in law: Pamela and Victor Marasti of Wood River, one son and daughter in law: Steven and Stacey Starkey of Staunton, three grandchildren: Brandi Marasti of Wood River, Steven Starkey of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Jessica Starkey of Canon City, Colorado, one great grandson: Adam Byrd of Wood River who was the light of his life, two step grandchildren: Danielle Marasti of Springfield, Illinois, Joey Cox of Gillespie, Illinois, two step great - grandchildren: Zachary Cox of Staunton, Sky Marasti of Springfield, Illinois, one sister and brother in law: Dorothy and Charlie Sauls of Roxana, one brother and sister in law: Daniel and Janie Starkey of Rosewood Heights, four brothers in laws and sisters in law: Ray and Betty Dotson of Freeburg, Illinois, Raymond and Theresa Dotson of Freeburg, Illinois, Earl and Laura Dotson of Baldwin, Illinois, Virgil and Ruth Baker of Swansea, Illinois, a sister in law: Erma Hopping of Mackinaw, Illinois, two aunts: Marjorie Starkey of Edwardsville, Imogene Ancell of Rosewood Heights, along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was formerly employed as a claims adjustor for 26 years retiring from Madison Mutual Insurance Company. He then was employed at Roxana Community Unit School District #1 as a bus driver until his retirement in 2008. He was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Cottage Hills. He loved fishing, mushroom hunting, doing crossword puzzles, playing the banjo, and Blue Grass music. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He was a kind and caring person and will be truly missed by his family as well as those who loved him.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
In celebration of his life, visitation will be from 3pm to 7pm on Thursday, December 16, 2010 at Pitchford Funeral Home in Wood River. Funeral services will be held at 10am on Friday, December 17, 2010, at the funeral home. Brother Kevin Shaw will officiate. Burial will follow at Wanda Cemetery in South Roxana, Illinois.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Cottage Hills or to the charity of the donor's choice.
