Dennis “Denny” A. Yost, 74, passed away at 11:52 pm on Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at his residence with his family by his side.
He was born on July 2, 1937 in Alton, IL, the son of Fred and Evelyn (Scott) Yost.
He married Mary A. O’Neal on December 6, 1980 in Godfrey. She survives.
Denny graduated from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville with a Bachelors of Science. He retired from Navy Aviation with the rank of Lieutenant after four tours of duty in Vietnam and over 600 combat missions as an RIO in F4B Phantom Jet Fighters. During his service to our country he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, 24 Air Medals and a Navy Commendation Medal with 2 Stars and Combat “V”. Lt. Yost was also a graduate of Navy’s top Gun Fighter School.
He was an operator at Amoco in Wood River, Whiting, IN and Casper, WY from 1976 until his retirement in 1995. He was of the Catholic faith. He was a member of the Alton VFW Post 1308, the National Rifle Association, Austin Healey Club and the Retired Officers Association. He enjoyed cooking, woodworking, mechanics and lawn care.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children and their spouses, Lisa Sanders of Washington DC, Renee and Doug Myers of Escondido, CA, Nicki and Tony Lopez of Escondido, CA, Dale Alan and Sarah Davis of Joplin, MO, Kim and Matt Dubois of East Alton and Danny and Sheila Davis of Rapid City, SD; eighteen grandchildren, Alisha, Ben, Shaun, Luke, Chris, Dennis, Laci, Nick, Zach, Garrett, Stephanie, Monica, Heather, Misty, Justin, Deric, Dru and Kylee; six great grandchildren; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Larry and Susan Yost of Alton and Douglas Yost of Godfrey and a very large extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm on Friday, November 4, 2011 at Staten Fine Funeral Home in Alton.
A Funeral Mass will be at 10 am Saturday, November 5, 2010 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton with military rites by Alton VFW Post 1308, following the Mass.
Burial will be private at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
