Delmar Gusewelle

Delmar William Gusewelle, age 82, returned peacefully to his heavenly home on April 15, 2016.

Delmar was born July 8th, 1933 to the late Arthur F. and Tillie M. (Klopmeier) Gusewelle local farmers in East Alton, IL. He was baptized, confirmed and raised at Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto, IL where he was active in it’s Walther League Youth Group. He was educated at the Oak Grove School through 8th grade and then Roxana High School where he graduated in 1952. He was immersed in 4-H and farming activities from an early age was one of the first members of the Bethalto 4-H.

After High School he worked as a crane operator at the A.O. Smith frame factory in Granite City, returning there after his 21-month stent in the US Navy and finishing as a Die Maintenance Specialist. After his naval service he was involved in the Madison County Rural Youth where their activities offered him an introduction to his future bride. He lived in East Alton, IL until marrying Sara G. Grossenbacher of Overland, MO in 1962 and moving with Sara to Edwardsville, IL to establish their family home. For the last 21 years before retirement he worked as the maintenance man at Belk Park Golf Course in Wood River IL, which was adjacent to the family farm where he enjoyed home cooked meals and his lunch time with his Mother.

Delmar was a loving husband who especially enjoyed his time on the family farm and raising his son Glen. He was a longstanding member at Eden Church and was active in it’s Men’s Brotherhood. His avocation was working on the family farm.

Delmar was a very giving soul and enjoyed helping others. His vibrant smile and laughter accompanied many successful conclusions to projects. Delmar and Sara enjoyed square dancing and ball room dancing with friends for many years. Through the years he took great joy in his family, especially after retirement. He is dearly missed by his loved ones, who celebrate the fact that he is out of pain and at peace with his creator.

Delmar is survived by his son Glen and grandson Grant of Overland Park, KS, and his sister Joan Gusewelle of Wood River, brother Donald Gusewelle and his wife Darlene of Gillespie, IL., sister’s-in-law Billie Beth Baldwin of Creve Coeur, MO, Margaret Ellen Jolley of Federal Way, WA, Mary Anne and Robert Becker of O’Fallon, MO and; in-laws, nephews, nieces, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his son Gregory Gusewelle, his wife Sara; and his parents.

A visitation is being held on Thursday, April 21, 2016 at Weber Rodney Funeral Home from 4-8pm. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 22, 2016 at Eden United Church of Christ in Edwardsville, IL beginning at 10am, with a reception to follow in the church’s fellowship hall. Senior Pastor John Roberts will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Delmar's life. Memorial donations may be sent to Eden United Church of Christ - Building Fund at 903 N. Second Street, Edwardsville, Illinois 62025.
