Dean Edmond Copeland, 94, died at 7:05 a.m. Friday, March 4, 2016 at Jerseyville Manor.  Born March 13, 1921 in Alton, he was the son of Joseph and Pauline (Hartman) Copeland.  Mr. Copeland served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and attended Abundant Life Community Church.  He retired in 1982 as Captain of the Alton Fire Department after 30 years of service.  From 1983-2010 he worked for the Fosterburg Water Department.  He also did farming and excavating on the side.  On May 26, 1951 he married Leah “Faye” Fern Angel.  She preceded him in death on August 1, 1998.  He married Vida Smith on September 29, 2005.  She survives.  Also surviving is a son and daughter-in-law Brad and Jan Copeland of Alton, three grandchildren, Amy Copeland (Mike Abernathy) of Springfield, MO, Angela Copeland of Alton, and Allyson Copeland of Alton.  He is also survived by brothers and sisters, William “Bill” Copeland (Edna) of Bethalto, Marylin Melton of Bakersfield, CA, Roberta “Bertie” Kennett of Stanton, KY, Paul Copeland (Lois) of Alton and Anna Lee Terry of Bethalto.  He was preceded in death by two brothers, Carlos and Dwayne Copeland, a sister, Ruby Harris as well as an infant sister.  Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton where funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 9, 2016.  Pastor Roy Rhodes will officiate.  Burial will be at Short Cemetery in Foster Twp. with full military honors by the VFW Post 1308.  Memorials may be made to Abundant Life Community Church.  Online guestbook and information may be found at
