David Preston Martin, 80, died at 2:45 p.m., Friday, May 31, 2013 at his residence after an extended illness.
He was born in Jerseyville on Dec. 20, 1932, and was one of four children born to the late Otis Preston & Hattie Eileen (Champlin) Martin.
David was a U.S. Navy veteran, and retired in 1992 as a Group Leader from Olin Corp. in East Alton, where he was employed for 41 years. His true passions, however, was woodworking, and he enjoyed bestowing his family and friends with his gifts and treasures for them to keep.
He married the former Linda Ransom on Nov. 22, 1968 in White Hall, and they have blessed with 44 years together.
Surviving are his wife, Linda Martin of Brighton; a son, David Martin of Grand Island, Ne.; two stepchildren, Tony, and his wife, Tammy Gunterman of Jerseyville: a daughter, Jeanie Gunterman of Brighton; seven grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren, including Kevin Gunterman, Jacob Connolly and Callie Connolly, whom he was especially grateful for the time spent with them; and a sister & brother in law, Clara & Dean Huff of Jerseyville.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Doris "Sissy" Martin on Jan. 29, 2010 and Vicki Ann Martin on Nov. 8, 2011; a brother, Charles Martin; and a sister, Gladys Davis.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., Monday at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Tuesday. Rev. David Prosser will officiate.
Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville.
Memorials may be given to the Jersey County Health Department or to the Illinois Valley Rehabiliation Center in Jerseyville.
