David Nagel

Alhambra |

David Lee Nagel, 82 years old, of Strongsville, Ohio, formerly of Alhambra, Illinois, died Sunday, March 30, 2025, at Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.

David was born on August 30, 1942, in Highland, Illinois to Melvin and Laura (nee Ahring) Nagel.

On Saturday, January 4, 1964, he married Judith Louise Nagel (nee Ruehrup) at Alhambra, Illinois, who passed away on Sunday, November 6, 2011.

David spent his childhood farming and milking on his dairy farm in Highland, Illinois with his older brother, James Nagel (deceased), and younger brother, Ronald Nagel. He also worked attending to herds of buffalo on the small local farm in Highland as a young adult.

David attended Highland Community Schools and after which he spent his early married years farming on their small family farm in Alhambra, Illinois, where he and his wife raised four children and along with Judy’s parents’ Elmer and Edith (Steiner) Ruehrup (both deceased) bottled and delivered milk door-to-door. He and wife Judy were active 4-H Leaders and have been involved with both Salem United Church of Christ in Alhambra and Middleburg Heights Community United Church of Christ in Middleburg Heights, Ohio.

In the mid-1980s, David’s wife began working for the United Church of Christ National Headquarters in St. Louis, Missouri, and in 1989, they relocated with the United Church of Christ to Cleveland, Ohio, where he worked until he was laid off from his Mailroom position.

After being laid off, David retired and soon started volunteering with Southwest General Hospital until he had to have hip replacement surgery. He then started working as a part-time Train Engineer for Smiles Aboard at Southpark Mall, where he worked up until a fall led to deteriorating health issues this past November 2024.

He will be sadly missed as a respected member of the community. David loved spending time with his eight grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren, and would often travel many miles to ensure he was able to celebrate special occasions with them. He also had a perfect driving record NEVER causing an accident and NEVER issued a traffic citation during his entire life. May we all be blessed as good as drivers with the love of traveling as David.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Judith L. Nagel (nee Ruehrup); his parents, Melvin and Laura (nee Ahring) Nagel; brother, James Nagel; and son-in-law, Joseph A. Koehler.

Surviving are his four children: Janice M. Koehler of Strongsville, Ohio; Michael “Mike” W. Nagel of St. Charles, Missouri; Mark A. (Kris) Nagel of Alhambra, Illinois; and Denise K.
