David Lee Chandler, 74, died at 4:20 p.m., Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at Christian Hospital Northeast in St. Louis, Missouri.
He was born in Alton, Illinois on April 7, 1950, and was one of four children born to John Glennan and Dorothy Irene (King) Chandler.
David graduated in 1968 from Jersey Community High School in Jerseyville and was a United States Navy veteran. He began his employment with Clark Oil Refinery (now Premcor) and retired after many dedicated years as a Fire Chief.
He was a dedicated family man and enjoyed any event that everyone could be together. He thoroughly enjoyed his grandchildren, and their endeavors, and rarely missed an event that they were participating in.
It was no secret that he was a huge fan of Elvis Presley, and he was known to make his granddaughter endure a good Western movie. As a proud veteran, he was honored to participate with the Jerseyville American Legion Post 492 Color Guard.
More than anything, David was known for his infectious personality, boundless energy and work ethic, and a sense of humor that made him the life of any get together, and a favorite among his family of friends.
He married the former Syliva Godar on March 20, 1974, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, and together, they were blessed with three children, Heather, Keith and Chad. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a family trip to Mexico.
He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Chandler of Jerseyville; two sons and daughters in-law, Keith and Tara Chandler of Holiday Shores and Chad and
Marti Chandler of Jerseyville; eight grandchildren, Izabella Golley and Alexandra Golley of Chicago, Christian Charles Chandler of Lake Ozark, Mo., Chanclee Chandler and Channing Chandler of Holiday Shores, Logan (Anna) Chandler of Rosewood Heights, Zachary Chandler of Chicago, Aiden Chandler of Jerseyville; and another grandchild due to arrive in February; one great granddaughter, Palmer Blake Chandler; a brother and sister in-law, James and Jackie Chandler of Mattoon; a sister in-law, Sue Chandler of Jerseyville; and sisters in-law and brothers in-law, Wanda Groppel of Jerseyville, Theresa and Richard Killion of Jerseyville and Dwain and Roberta Godar of Alton.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Heather (Chandler) Golley on December 25, 2022; a brother, John Chandler; a sister, Mary E. Chandler; and a brother in-law, Harold Theodore "Ted" Groppel.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, with Father Martin Smith officiating.
He will be laid to rest in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery in Jerseyville, with the Jerseyville American Legion Post 492 conducting military graveside rites.
Memorials may be given to the Disabled American Veterans.
