Darrell Rushton

Hartford |

Darrell M. Rushton, 81, passed peacefully in his sleep on January 29, 2025.

Born October 24, 1943 Hartford, he was the son of Bonnie and Margaret (Lewis) Rushton.

Preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Bramlett, daughter, Julia Jones; and siblings, Harold Rushton, Roy Rushton, Judy Walker, Sandra "Sis" McCartney, Raymond Rushton, David Rushton.

Survived by his daughter Jackie Fennewald; two granddaughters whom he adored, Madelyn and Claire Fennewald; as well as sisters, Margaret “Babe” Spangler, Linda Gernigin, Sharon Seidler; and brothers, Walter, Mike, Bill; dear friends Scott and Amy Maberry (bonus family); and too many nieces and nephews to count.

He was always proud to tell you he grew up in “Little Italy,” and had a story to go along about something mischievous he and his brothers had done when they were young.

Darrell entered the U.S. Marine Corps in February 1962 and was, without question, “Once a Marine, Always a Marine.” He was so proud of the time he spent serving his country, sharing his stories of that time, with pride, until the end.

He always had a beautiful yard and tending to his flowers and making sure it was pristine was something he enjoyed. Being outdoors was his favorite and the hotter the weather, the happier he was. He loved camping trips with family and friends, the #7 car and the time he spent with the Willis family at racetracks, a good cup of coffee, cheeseburgers, chef salad with poppyseed dressing, bratwurst, local diners, Butterfinger Blizzards, Facebook, although he said he didn’t, the town of Roxana, and having a nice set of wheels.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of service at 12 p.m., Monday, February 3, at Marks Mortuary in Wood River. Frank Akers will officiate.

Burial will follow in Woodland Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name can be made to Wounded Warriors Project or BJC Hospice in care of The BJC Foundation for Hospice, PO Box 790369, St. Louis Mo 63179-9917 or at bjchospice.org/donate.
