Daniel Bruce Tomkinson

Daniel Bruce Tomkinson, 59, died on Friday, November 26, 2010 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. 

He was born in Auburn, Ind. on May 20, 1951 to Richard and Donna (McBride) Tomkinson.  He was the first born, followed by his brother Dennis and his sister Mary.  A Boy Scout in his youth, he had a lifelong appreciation of nature and wildlife and volunteered for many years at a wildlife rescue shelter.  He spent most of his youth in Manhattan, Kansas and pursued geology at Kansas State University.  He moved with his family to Godfrey in 1969.  He was actively involved with the family business, Mr. T’s Skating Club in Alton, later becoming the general manager.  Following the business’s closure he obtained his degree at Rankin Technical College and was a machinist at Pavyer Printing Works in St. Louis.  He greatly enjoyed singing, first in the choir at St. John’s United Church of Christ, and then for many years in a barbershop quartet.

He is survived by his wife Beverly (Bartels) Tomkinson of East Alton; his three children and their spouses, Christopher and Rufelyn Tomkinson of San Tan Valley, Ariz., Zachary and Shannon Tomkinson of Godfrey, and Ashley and Tim Plummer of East Alton; five grandchildren, Kenneth and Kesler Tomkinson of San Tan Valley, Cameron Tomkinson of Godfrey, and Zelda and Tesla Plummer of East Alton; his mother, Donna Tomkinson of Godfrey; his brother and sister-in-law, Dennis and Mary Tomkinson of Clinton, Ill.; his sister, Mary Tomkinson Kohn and her husband Charles of Godfrey; and many nieces, nephews, and great nephews.  He was preceded in death by his father.

In celebration of his life, visitation will be held from 9-11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1 at St. John’s united Church of Christ in Wood River.  Funeral services will be held immediately following at 11 a.m., with Pastor Mike Southcombe officiating.

Burial will be at Upper Alton Cemetery in Alton.

Memorials may be made to St. John’s UCC in Wood River.
