Clifton J. “C.J.” Powell, age 93, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 18, 2011 in Piedmont, AL. He was a former residence of Alton and Brighton, IL.
He was born on November 26, 1917 in Meridian, MS, son of the late Franklin J. & Effie Mae (Brown) Powell.
He married Mary Vashti (Jackson) Powell on October 29, 1938 in Zalma, MO. She passed away on June 9, 2002.
C.J. was employed with the Alton Box Boards where he retired in 1975, and also farmed the family farm for many years. He loved to coach Khoury League, was a coon hunter and crappie fisherman.
He is survived by three sons and two daughters and their spouses, Joe & Diana Powell of Granite City, Bob & Kathleen Powell of Ironton, MO, Ruth Dewitte of Bowling Green, OH, Rachel & Johnny Pace of Piedmont, AL and Jim & Sue of Powell of Litchfield, IL; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 10 great great-grandchildren and a brother Cletis Powell of Naylorville, MO.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents; his wife and a grandson, Jeffrey David Whitten.
Visitation will be from 9:00 am until funeral service at 11:00 am on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey.
Burial will follow at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey, IL.
