Cliff A. Mathus Jr., 86, died at 12:30 a.m. Monday, February 24, 2014 at Rosewood Care Center in Alton with his loving family by his side. Born May 3, 1927 in Alton, he was the son of Cliff Aeriel and Maybelle (Coyle) Mathus. Mr. Mathus served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the Upper Alton Baptist Church, the Franklin Masonic Lodge #25 and the Alton Antique Auto Association. In 1989 he retired as an electrician from Wegman Electric Company IBEW 649. On April 2, 1948 he married the former Martha Johnston. She preceded him in death in 1986. Surviving is a son, Robert Mathus (Marge) of High Ridge, MO, two grandchildren, Brian Mathus (Maggie) and Brent Mathus (Kristen), five grandchildren, Carter, Riley, Spencer, Gwyneth, and Cooper, a brother, Roger Mathus, three sisters-in-law, Margie Mathus, and Priscilla Mathus, Betty Hayes (Cletus) and several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Marsha, a sister, Lucy Lawrence, and four brothers, John Mathus, Howard Mathus, and R. Homer Mathus, and Phillip Mathus. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton where funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 27, 2014. Pastor Brad Donoho will officiate. Burial will be at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey. The family would like to personally thank Dr. John Hoelscher and his staff. Also, a special thank you to Judy Roth and Eileen Cheatham who were care givers to him in a very special way.
