Cheryl A. Cannon, 78, of East Alton, passed away on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at Alton Memorial Rehab & Therapy.
She was born on June 10, 1946, in Alton, IL, the daughter of Cecil C. and Mary Alice (Bond) Hodge. Cheryl married Gary E. Cannon, 57 years ago, in Alton, IL, on September 1, 1967. They had two daughters, Melanie and Sara. Her granddaughter Vivienne was one of the greatest joys of her life.
Cheryl earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville and spent her career as an elementary teacher in the Alton School District, retiring after 34 years of teaching art and second grade. She devoted her life to the service of others, most notably in the many positions she held at Meadowbrook 1st Church of God (now Lifebrook Church), including Sunday School teacher, choir director for The Good Time Singers, song leader, and many roles within the Women of the Church of God. She also frequently reached out to people through handwritten notes of friendship and encouragement.
Along with her husband, Gary, she is survived by her children, Melanie Cannon and Dr. Sara (Jason Hull) Cannon Hull; granddaughter Vivienne Cannon Hull; sisters Donna Thomson and Mary (Jeff) Rigdon; nephews Dennis and James Hodge and Philip Thomson; and niece Angela Rigdon.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Dennie and Robert Hodge; and nephew Terry Rigdon.
Visitation will be held on Friday, February 14, 2025, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto, where services will also be held on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. Pastor Matt Hale will officiate. Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens.
