Charles R. Votruba

Charles R. Votruba, 87, passed away at 8:00 pm Thursday, March 24, 2011 at Rosewood Care Center in Edwardsville with his family by his side, while under the care of Hospice of Southern Illinois.

He was born on March 31, 1923 in Memphis, TN, the son of Joseph and Ruth (Kolley) Votruba.

He married Bernice E. Metzner on September 20, 1945.  She passed away in December, 1988.  He married S. Jean Weigel Brickner on June 14, 1991.  She survives.

He served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946.  He was a gunner’s mate on the USS Lake Kalarny and the USS Ackerson, both merchant ships. He was an electrician for G. Levy Sign Company in Fairmont City until his retirement in 1988. He was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Bethalto and a member of the Barlog-Kuszaj-Zero American Legion St. Louis Post 422 for over 50 years.  He served as a Trustee for Fort Russell Township and Holiday Shores Sanitary District, Chairman for the Holiday Shores St. Patrick’s Dance Committee for over 25 years, and member of IBEW Local 309 Retirees Club.

He is survived by his wife, a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Jim Mueller of Fenton, MO; a step daughter and her husband, Dee and Barry Dauber of Naperville, IL; a stepson and his wife, S.S.G. Robert and Michelle Brickner of Columbia, SC; three grandchildren; five step grandchildren; five great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, and two brothers, Joseph Votruba Jr. and John Votruba.

Visitation will be from 2:00 to 6:00 pm on Sunday, March 27, 2011 at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto.  A funeral Mass will be at 10:00 am on Monday, March 28, 2011 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Bethalto with Father Tom Liebler as celebrant.

Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.

Memorials may be made to Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church or Hospice of Southern Illinois.
