Charles J. “Chick” Overath, 90, died at 1:13 p.m. Monday, September 19, 2011 at St. Anthony’s Hospital. Born October 24, 1920 in Alton, he was the son of Charles Calvin and Fannie (Alderson) Overath.
He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was a member of the Twelfth Street Presbyterian Church in Alton. He retired as a fireman from the Alton Fire Department after over 20 years of service.
On October 29, 1939 in St. Charles, MO, he married the former Fernthelma “Fern” Wild. She preceded him in death on May 30, 2003.
Surviving is a son, Charles W. Overath of Belleville, a daughter, Jeanne E. Salmond and her husband Bill of Cumming, GA, seven grandchildren, Melissa (Eric) Thornburg of Madison, Connecticut, Kim Pennington of Edwardsville, Charles “Chad” (Kary) Overath IV of Mt. Juliet, TN, Mauri Overath of Jerseyville, Jill (Jason) Unverzagt of Belleville, Jim Salmond of Alpharetta, GA, Ann (Frank) Hoerner of Cumming, GA, seven great grandchildren, one sister, Norma Tinsley of Mountain Home, AR, and a daughter-in-law, Maureen Kay Overath Durham of Godfrey.
He was preceded in death by a son, Larry J. Overath, a grandson, Matthew Morris Overath, and a daughter-in-law, Rita Overath.
Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until time of funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Burial will be at Upper Alton Cemetery.
